JOKAklubi:

Off Art Talent Show
Participative performance, 2012

The performance group JOKAklubi (meaning “everyman’s club”) of the Finnish artists Mirka Raito, Niina Letonen-Braun and Tellervo Kalleinen involves a very situative, momentary, and temporary form of participation. Their moderated club evenings combine performance, music, and visual elements. The topics vary according to the site, the country, and the context, always constituting a singular seemingly surreal ambience. Local artists and people who like to perform are invited to participate, thus decisively influencing the way the evening turns out. At the restaurant Ziegel oh Lac, Rote Fabrik, the “Off Art Talent Show” is performed by local talents invited for a short presentation on stage. The three women are the jury, judging the presentations by particular methods like an oracle or the Off-Art-Accumulator, and deciding whether something is “in” or “off” in Zurich. They make a mockery of the format of competitions like talent shows and, at the same time, create a new form of participation. What counts is not the selection of the best but the moment of sharing and giving. Each and every person offers the audience what he or she is good in, thus creating a singular situation based on presence, and giving, and fun.
